Driver's Licenses in the United States

Are you an international in need of a South Carolina Driver's license?
You must apply for your license within 90 days of arrival to South Carolina.

Where do I go?

The Department of Motor Vehicle Office that handles international issues is located at 15 Saluda Dam Road, Greenville, SC 29611.
Office Hours are Monday - Friday, 8:30 AM - 5 PM

What do I need to bring?

  • Letter from Human Resources Dept (stating name, address and contract length)
  • Passport with visa
  • Driver's License from home country
  • If license is from Germany or France: either International Driver's License or Certified Translation of Driver's License
  • Social security card or letter from Social Security office stating that you are not eligible for a social security number
  • Auto Insurance Card

Do I have to take any tests?

If you have a valid driver's license from Germany, France or Canada, only a vision test is required. If you do not have a license from one of the countries listed, it is necessary to take both the computerized driving skills test as well as a practical driving exam.
