In Part Four of our Wetzel Services Unplugged blog series, Sonja Neufeld gives insight into the adventures of flying an air glider, camping in the desert, and the joy of getting up early.
Sonja probably knows the Greenville area better than a lot of natives. “Almost 15 years ago, we found ourselves at home here,” she says. Sonja joined her husband for his expat adventure with a German company in 2003. After the assignment was over, they decided to stay.
Sonja joined the Wetzel team about four years ago, and then soon got her Real Estate license to join the realty team. “What I like about my job is supporting people in having an easier start to their experience in a new country,” Sonja says. She likes helping expats find their homes and also assisting with DMV, Social Security office, and bank visits. “The variety of tasks is what I like. Some days I’m in the office talking to landlords, homeowners, expats and matching schedules for appointments. Other days I’m out all day, helping people to get to know the area and to settle in.”
Before Sonja moved from Germany to South Carolina, she had a unique hobby. On the weekends, she enjoyed views of Germany from high above as a licensed air glider pilot. “Sometimes it got very adventurous when I had to land on bumpy cornfields because I couldn’t make it back to the airport,” she laughs.
She also loved to travel all around Europe. Taking a trip off the tourist track in an RV through Israel, Jordan, and Egypt was an exceptional experience. “We camped in the desert and celebrated my birthday on Mount Sinai with friends. These are very special memories.” Even now, when Sonja visits Germany with her family, they try to combine it with a trip to a new city in a different European country.
Sonja’s favorite time of the day is the peaceful and quiet morning hours. She starts the day with yoga practice before she makes breakfast for the family. Sometimes she can convince her family to get up VERY early (we are talking about 4 o’clock) on weekends and go to the mountains for a sunrise hike. “Once you’re in nature, it’s just beautiful!” she says. Sonja also spends a lot of time cheering for her two girls, who are 14 and 16 years old, and are highly involved in their school’s track and cross-country teams.
Besides hiking, Sonja’s favorite place to be is the beach, where she likes to go to relax and unwind.
